A word from Congressman Shadegg

Washington Politicians Mortgage Our Future for Their Benefit
by Congressman John Shadegg

As they left town for Christmas, Congress passed an unprecedented end-of-the-year appropriations bill with billions in wasteful spending designed principally to benefit incumbent Members of Congress. This bill includes thousands of self-serving Member-directed spending projects and displays total disregard for both legislative process and the Constitution. Though civics teaches that both Houses of Congress must pass a bill before it can be presented to the President for his signature to become law, this did not happen. Instead the House, fearful of political fallout, used trickery so Members could avoid voting on the actual bill as it passed the Senate. A dangerous precedent.

The 3,417 page bill (34 pounds) was dropped barely 20 hours before final consideration by the House. It included 9,170 Member-directed spending projects. Over 300 of these had never been made public, seen by rank-and-file Members, or passed by either House. Combined with the 2,161 passed earlier, Members gave themselves a total of 11,331 self-serving projects, costing Americans over $20 billion this year. During this season of goodwill, this bill, and those who crammed it through Congress, showed none toward American taxpayers, their children, or grandchildren.

This legislation continues an embarrassing trend in government pork-barrel spending, funneling untold billions into pet projects designed to re-elect incumbents. Most such projects are not requested, or even supported, by the Departments obligated to deliver them. Many are outright corrupt - directing funds to Members' contributors, former staffers, and even family members. The Democrat leadership promised to "make this the most honest, ethical, and open Congress in history," yet under their guidance Members of both parties continue brazenly using tax dollars to benefit themselves.

Senator Ted Stevens matched his "Bridge to Nowhere" with $20 million for a "Ferry to Nowhere" that appears to benefit his brother-in-law and former staffers Congressman Jim Clyburn, the Democrat Whip, obtained $229,000 for the Drew Wellness Center, a physical fitness center where his daughter works. In 2003, Clyburn obtained the $900,000 to construct the center. Clyburn also obtained $3 million for a private charity associated with the "James Clyburn Golf Center" he established at taxpayer expense in 2002. Charles Rangel, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee obtained $1.95 million for a center bearing his name and bragged on the House Floor that he deserved it. The bill even restored the now infamous Hillary Clinton-Chuck Schumer Woodstock museum.

Members devote huge amounts of time to these projects and openly acknowledge the funds are being used - not for the larger public good - but to ensure incumbents' reelection. In a letter to Speaker Pelosi, the leader of a prominent Congressional Member caucus complained that caucus Members weren't receiving enough projects to ensure the reelection of its incumbents in "highly contested races." At this rate, Members will soon complain they aren't receiving sufficient bribes to maintain their lifestyle.

While the short-term ramifications of Washington's corruption and fiscal promiscuity are disturbing, the long-term consequences for our children and grandchildren should give every American cause for serious concern. Because Congress chooses to spend far more than is collected in current taxes, the government must borrow money to fund our largess.

And borrow we have, to the point where our current national debt is a whopping $9.2 trillion dollars - or more accurately $9,193,315,468, 899.43 as of December 21, 2007. That translates to $30,323.94 of debt for every man, woman, and child in America.

Who, exactly, is lending us all this money? Well, Japan has lent us $586 billion. We owe communist China $400 billion. Our "friends" in Saudi Arabia and other oil producing nations have lent us $123 billion. And here is the really bad news: they expect us to pay them back - with interest. In fact, we paid $430 billion in interest on our debt last year alone.

Of course, current taxpayers are not going to pay anywhere close to all of that debt - we can't possibly. So who will be stuck paying for our wasteful and irresponsible spending? Today's wasteful and corrupt spending will be tomorrow's obligation. Our children and grandchildren will be forced to repay today's wasteful spending. Anyone who truly cares about the future of their children and grandchildren must demand that Washington put an end to this corrupt and economically disastrous practice.

One recent survey put Congress's approval rating at eleven percent. Given the self-serving, wasteful conduct Congress continues to engage in, it is shocking the number is not lower.

There will be much celebration and back slapping in Washington this Christmas as Members congratulate themselves for a job well done. But I suspect, as Americans learn once again that Members of Congress devote more energy to looking out for themselves than the nation's and our children's well-being, Congressional approval ratings will sink ever further, and deservedly so.

The Whinning Continues

Romney Advisor Barbara Comstock Attacked Gov. Huckabee For Using The “A” Word – “Arrogant” – And Compared Huckabee To Leading Democrats.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: “Do you hold him to this apology demand, Barbara Comstock?” … COMSTOCK: “Yes. I do. … Governor Romney did call -- and I do, too -- that [Huckabee] should apologize to the president, because he sounded more like Hillary Clinton or Obama. And Republicans are not going to win by sounding like Hillary Clinton.” (MSNBC’s “Hardball,” 12/18/07)

Leading Supporters Of Mitt Romney Agree With Huckabee:

Former Hastert Spokesman And MSNBC Commentator John Feehery Said The Former Speaker “Sees This White House As Pretty Arrogant.”

“A Bush loyalist, [Hastert] nevertheless ‘sees this White House as pretty arrogant,’ said a former spokesman, John Feehery. An example is the recent firing of former CIA chief Porter Goss without giving Hastert prior notice. And last week delivered another test of the relationship - and of what happens when the White House forgets Hastert is the third-most-powerful Republican in the nation.” (Chicago Sun Times, 5/28/06)

And Accused President Bush Of Breaching Separation Of Powers. “The speaker accused the Justice Department of trying to intimidate him by leaking information to ABC News that he was linked to the probe of convicted GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff. ‘A brushback pitch,’ said his deputy chief of staff, Mike Stokke, fingering the leak - denied by Justice - as retaliation for Hastert’s strong objections to an FBI raid last weekend of the office of Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.), who is under investigation for public corruption. Hastert said the search was a breach of the Constitution’s separation-of-power provisions and told Bush that while in Chicago.” (Chicago Sun Times, 5/28/06)

Reps. Dave Camp (R-MI) And Tom Petri (R-WI) Expressed Concern: “When the argument over invading Iraq was publicly joined in the summer of 2002, mainstream Republicans were queasy. That September, Republican Dave Camp for Michigan, told me his constituents were ‘concerned about a go-it-alone strategy,’ and Republican Thomas Petri for Wisconsin said voters in his district expressed ‘concern about whether we know what we’re doing or how we’re going to do it.’” (E. J. Dionne Jr., Op-Ed, “Morning In America,” The Washington Post, 5/20/07)

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) Called The U.S. Intelligence Community “Arrogant” And “Incompetent.” “The top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee defied the Bush administration Sunday and pledged to investigate the destruction of CIA interrogation tapes. The Justice Department has urged Congress not to investigate and advised intelligence officials not to cooperate with a legislative inquiry. ‘You’ve got a community that’s incompetent. They are arrogant. And they are political,’ Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., said. ‘And I think that we’re going to hold [CIA Director] Mike Hayden accountable.’” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 12/18/07)

Comstock Touted Romney’s National Review Endorsement.
COMSTOCK: “[T]he reason [Romney]’s gotten endorsed by people like ‘National Review,’ a preeminent conservative magazine, is because people understand he is a full spectrum conservative, as I said.” (MSNBC’s “Hardball,” 12/18/07)

National Review Noted Capitol Hill Republicans Complain About the Bush Administration Being “Arrogant” And “Out Of Touch” And, According To The Magazine, “There Is Truth In Each Complaint.” Republicans on Capitol Hill seem more interested in complaining about the Bush administration than in winning, or at least limiting their losses in, the midterm elections. The White House is arrogant; it is out of touch; it does not face the same electoral pressures we do: We have heard it all before, and there is truth in each complaint. But perhaps the recriminations can wait until after the elections?” (National Review, 5/8/06)

Comstock Touted Romney’s Endorsement By The American Conservative Union’s David Keane. COMSTOCK: “We have David Keene.” (MSNBC’s “Hardball,” 12/18/07)

David Keane Attacked Neoconservatives Who Populate The Bush Administration And Molded The Nation’s Iraq Policy For Their “Overbearing Arrogance.” “‘The principal sin of the neoconservatives,’ David Keane, chairman of the American Conservative Union, contends ‘is overbearing arrogance.’ … ‘It is not so much that they have been wrong. It is that nobody has ever convinced them that they have ever been wrong.’” (The [Newark, NJ] Star-Ledger, 10/23/06)

Comstock Touted Romney’s Endorsement By Conservative Activist Paul Weyrich.
COMSTOCK: “We have Paul Weyrich.” (MSNBC’s “Hardball,” 12/18/07)

According To The Conservative Magazine The Weekly Standard, Weyrich Discussed Bush Himself “With Obvious Venom.” “Paul Weyrich described Bush, with obvious venom, as a ‘moderate politician.’” (The Weekly Standard, 10/9/06)

On Another Note….

Romney Advisor Barbara Comstock Tried To Attack Gov. Huckabee On Cuba.
COMSTOCK: “And you know, [Huckabee] didn’t know ... about Cuba ... and policy like that.” (MSNBC’s “Hardball,” 12/18/07)

Romney Angered Cuban Americans In Florida, When He Used Fidel Castro’s Traditional Sign-Off Line: “Fatherland Or Death, We Shall Overcome.” “Romney angered Cuban-American officials and activists when he quoted dictator Fidel Castro’s traditional sign-off line ‘patria o muerte, venceremos’ - a Communist rallying cry which is loosely translated to mean ‘Fatherland or death, we shall overcome.’” (The Weekly Standard, 10/9/06)

Romney Claimed The Phrase Does Not Belong To Castro, But Cuban Politicians Said The Term Has Always Been A “Communist Catchphrase.” “Romney said the phrase ‘does not belong’ to Castro and should be returned to ‘a free Cuba.’ … Despite Romney’s explanation, Cuban politicians fumed that the term was coined by Castro’s regime and has always been a Communist catchphrase.” (The Weekly Standard, 10/9/06)

Dems want you further in Debt

As a fundraising effort, the Arizona Dems now want you to charge yourself into debt to support them. It sounds just like them doesn't it?

MCRC Chairman and First Vice Chairs Resign

Our beloved Lyle Tuttle and Dan Nichols are resigning their post as Chair and First Vice Chair of MCRC. Both have labored hard and have kept the ball moving forward. They will be missed. So far no one is stepping up to fill these big shoes. We need two individuals that will actually work and do something.

Time will only tell.

Pullen Asks for Mitchell for an Apology

Phoenix, AZ —Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen today said freshmen Democrat Harry Mitchell should apologize for comments his Democrat US House Speaker made yesterday at a press conference when she said, matter-of-factly, that Republicans like war.

"Our Commander in Chief, President Bush, placed his trust in a great military leader and strategist, General David Petraeus, and with our courageous American troops have embarked on a ‘surge strategy’ in Iraq that has the enemy on the run," said Pullen. "For this same Democrat Speaker of the House who has soiled her hands and the reputation of our great nation by consorting and negotiating with known sponsors of terrorism to now say Republicans like war is offensive and deserving of an apology."

At a press conference yesterday, Democrat US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said: "The [Democrat] grassroots are justifiably disappointed, and I am too, that we could not do something to end this war. The assumption that I made, that the Republicans would soon see the light… They like this war."

Speaker Pelosi’s comments come on the heels of increasingly vitriolic Democrat rhetoric. Earlier this year, Democrat Whip James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) let slip the Democrats’ anti-war election strategy when he professed that success in Iraq would be "a real big problem for us." And, on the actual floor of the US House, Democrat Congressman Pete Stark (D-California), a senior Democrat Member of Congress, accused President Bush of getting actual "amusement" from the deaths of US soldiers in Iraq.

"It’s one thing for Harry Mitchell to campaign on protecting our borders and protecting our county and then vote to weaken our national security – that’s a matter for him to discuss with the voters of Arizona’s 5th District," Pullen said. "But when he campaigns here in Arizona, and raises money here in Arizona, with a San Francisco liberal who is willing to say or do anything – including accuse Republicans of liking war – to get their tax-and-spend, surrender-at-all-costs majority reelected, Harry Mitchell needs to apologize for the actions of his leadership."

Now another point is that it is well known that Robson is termed limited in '08. Robson has been making inside tracks to run for 1 of 3 open corporation commission seat. Let him know that if he holds these bills that support may dwindle for future offices. Holding our immigration bills is a political move, we don't want to start catorgorizing Robson with Kris Mayes now.

Romney stole the show a CPAC

I have posted my concerns on Romney in the past, but he really impressed me today. He spoke well, spoke on the right subjects, and really energized the crowd.
If he keeps up this pace, he will be the candidate to beat.
Ann Coulter also publicly said that she likes Romney for President. But she also said that she loved Duncan Hunter.
If he keeps this up I may have to switch horses.

Sam Brownback bored me to tears....

I'm sorry he says all the right things, But he is just really boring to watch. Second he's an amnesty candidate.

Tancredo speaks frankly at CPAC.

Tancredo was warmly welcomed at CPAC. Tancredo spoke to all the core issues of conservatism, abortion, taxes & spending, and of course illegal immigration. Tancredo spoke well and rallied the crowd. The only improvement I would tell him to make is stop calling himself a "Long Shot".
The one quote I really loved in concerned with the war on Terror " The next President should realize our enemy's are psychopaths and our allies are the French."

Giuliani At CPAC Fizzles

Giuliani spoke at CPAC today. He was dressed well and spoke well but was not well received. Of course He spoke on being the first NY mayor to cut taxes and how he lowered the welfare rolls. He spoke on giving Americans more "Freedom". He also spoke on how no one agrees on every issue. And of course he spoke a lot about Reagan. I don't think the crowd bought it. They were quite compared to the previous speaker LaPierre of the NRA.

Later in the day Ann Coulter spoke to the fact that Giuliani was a liberal. Something that I've said before.

How Liberals Attack Conservatives

Over the years I've watched many Conservatives get attacked by liberals. Take Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, daily the liberal media try to portray these conservatives as Hate Mongers, Racists, Right-Wing Christian Nuts. That's what liberals do. When liberals can not win debates logically they turn to character assassinations. They will also turn to try to tarnish the credibility of the conservative in question. Then finally they will call a conservative by a title of what they are or accused of being.

This strategy is trying to put the conservative on the defensive instead of attacking the liberals. Liberals can rarely defend their positions logically. They resort to dirty tactics, distortion of facts and unqualified name calling. So when you see name calling in the media, just remember that's a Liberal Game. It's taken right out the Clinton Handbook of how to win.

This is even reaching into the Arizona Republican Party where the more moderates are attacking the conservatives and calling them RINO's. But mind you, these are the same people that call for the 11th commandment to be enforced, but yet they attack and flat out lie about others.

Stop Global Whining

I was listening to talk radio this morning, hearing about Al Gore and how much his Manision consumes in Utlitilies a month . I wanted to get to my computer right away and blog on it. I was beaten to punch by the great Greg Patterson over at espressopundit. He wrote a great story.

This is my add .

When Al Gore was asked to comment. His explanation is that he he purchase "Carbon Credits' from underdeveloped countries that that have no pollution.
Now here's the real flaw in this thinking. If you buy into "Global Warming" that mean the current level of pollution is the problem (Keyword current). Why would you pay a country that's not producing pollution to not produce more pollution? These countries aren't part of the current problem, they're not creating pollution. So why pay them to do NOTHING. Just more liberal spending to keep paying for the status quo.

And this man wanted to be President?
